The benefits of having a mentor

At Canning we know that running a business is a constant learning process, and it helps to have people on your side.

The Canning Business Mentoring Program is a free program on offer for Canning business owners and operators to help take their business to the next step along their business journey.

The program offers a range of mentoring opportunities for local businesses of all sizes and at all stages, from start-ups through to seasoned operators.

The 2020 program received a record number of applications from local businesses looking to build skills, adapt and grow both now and in the post COVID-19 world.

There were 49 applicants for 20 sponsored places in the program, with four places in the Curtin Ignition Program still to be selected in late July. It is the largest number of applicants in the program’s four year history.

Most programs started in May, and the program partners adjusted quickly to move their mentoring programs into the digital space.

One of the new programs piloted this year, Young Gems, received the greatest interest. It will take 12 budding entrepreneurs of all abilities or diverse backgrounds on a journey to create their own start-up, delivered in partnership with

India’s tax-to-GDP ratio plunges to a decade low of 9.88% in FY20

India’s tax-to-slid further in FY20 to a 10-year low of 9.88 per cent, driven by a decline in collections from Customs and corporation tax, while excise duty posted marginal growth.

The ratio stood at 10.97 per cent in FY19, and at 11.22 per cent in FY18. It is only estimated to decline further, with revenues falling on account of a slump in economic activity.

While the ratio determines the extent to which the government is able to finance its expenditure, it is also an indicator of tax compliance. Developed countries have a higher contribution of tax to their GDP.

AstraZeneca, Gilead merger likely to hit political, strategic hurdles

A merger of drugmakers AstraZeneca and Gilead Sciences is unlikely, said analysts, after reports said the UK firm made a preliminary approach to its US peer last month.

Political opposition from both the UK and the US could derail any attempt at a deal, especially given the backdrop of the Covid-19 outbreak, Citigroup said.

“US government would likely try to block any acquisition of a major US biopharma company that is involved in pandemic therapeutic development. Even greater political opposition is seen from the UK government,” wrote Citigroup analyst Andrew Baum.

The timing is also questionable, as while Gilead is in the middle of a turnaround, AstraZeneca is well positioned and has a strong pipeline, analysts said. Yet there is potential for synergies, and Gilead could compliment AstraZeneca’s portfolio in the areas of virology and inflammatory treatment, according to RBC. AstraZeneca shares fell over 3 per cent in London, underperforming the Stoxx 600 Health Care Index. Gilead rose 4.6 per cent in premarket trading.

US Police Officer Charged In Floyd Death To Appear In Court

The white police officer whose fatal arrest of George Floyd sparked mass protests for racial justice across the United States and beyond was to make his first court appearance Monday in Minneapolis, where the city council has moved to disband the police department.

Thousands of mourners were expected to attend a memorial for the 46-year-old African American at the Fountain of Praise Church in Houston, the Texas town where he grew up and is to be buried on Tuesday next to his mother.

Among those paying their respects will be Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, who were also to meet privately with Floyd’s family.

In Minnesota, Derek Chauvin, 44, a 19-year veteran of the Minneapolis police force, was to appear in court to face second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter charges for his role in Floyd’s May 25 death.
