Adventure Time: Distant Lands introduces Misiones Secundarias, a new spin-off series that reunites Finn and Jake as its central figures while broadening the franchise’s established world. The initiative follows the 2018 conclusion of the original series and represents a deliberate return to the show’s initial episodic adventure framework, moving away from the more somber, character-focused storytelling seen in later installments like Fionna & Cake. This approach allows the creators to revisit familiar territory without altering key narrative elements.

The spin-off is set between the first and second seasons of the original Adventure Time, capturing a period when Finn and Jake were still young and impulsive, driven solely by exploration. This timeframe enables the series to maintain continuity, such as Finn’s ownership of the Enchiridion, a magical tome he obtains in Season 1 and retains through Season 4, while introducing new characters to expand the lore without conflicting with existing events. The decision to place the story here ensures that major plot developments remain intact.

The visual direction of Misiones Secundarias has generated discussion among fans. Earlier seasons of the original series featured bold, flat 2D animation, but this spin-off adopts a more refined, illustrated approach resembling fantasy concept art. The updated style incorporates richer colors and a near-3D effect, aiming to refresh the aesthetic for modern audiences.

Unlike later seasons that looked into detailed themes and emotional depth, this spin-off emphasizes standalone adventures over complex storytelling. The strategy aligns with other animated revivals, such as Teen Titans Go! and Scooby-Doo reboots, which reset character arcs to attract a wider audience. By focusing on nostalgia, Misiones Secundarias aims to recapture the lighthearted spirit of Finn and Jake’s early journeys while avoiding the heavier thematic elements that defined later seasons.

The first 12 episodes of Misiones Secundarias are available on HBO Max, with four new episodes released weekly. Cartoon Network also broadcasts the series, though it remains unclear whether HBO Max will release the full 20-episode first season at once or wait for a second batch. In the United States, the second season has already aired, leaving Latin American viewers awaiting further updates on regional availability.
