PayPal revenue rises as digital payments grow despite profit dip
PayPal’s third-quarter revenue increased by 2% year-over-year to $8.58 billion, continuing a trend of steady growth in digital payments. The company’s total payment volume rose 6% to $487.1 billion, while individual transactions grew 7% to 6.796 billion. Active accounts expanded only 0.6%, reaching 440 million—a slowdown in user growth despite higher transaction volumes. Net income under GAAP standards declined 14% to $1.07 billion, though non-GAAP earnings fell just 3% to $1.245 billion.
This performance aligns with broader consumer behavior shifts, where digital payments have become a necessity. The modest growth in active accounts indicates that existing users are conducting more transactions rather than new customers joining in large numbers. Meanwhile, the drop in net income reveals persistent challenges in maintaining profitability as transaction volumes increase.
Zip Co announced plans to expand its tap-to-pay service to Best Buy locations nationwide, enabling customers to complete purchases using their phones. This move follows a retail industry trend toward contactless payment integration, which reduces checkout delays. Fraud trends are changing as well. Justt’s review of chargeback disputes from July 2024 to June 2026 identified a rise in complaints about undelivered items and canceled subscriptions, now representing 24.1% of cases, up from 13%. Fraud-related disputes, however, decreased from 74.6% to 60.4%, suggesting a shift toward merchant-service problems instead of fraud itself.
