The ARK Venture strategy, pioneered by Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest, has been extended to wealthy Australian investors. Associate Global Partners (AGP) launched the ARK Venture Fund (Australian Feeder) in collaboration with ARK Invest, offering access to pre-IPO investments in AI and related sectors.

Targeting Disruptive Innovation

ARK defines ‘disruptive innovation’ as introducing tech-enabled products or services that can significantly transform industries. The fund targets sectors like AI and next-gen internet, space and defense innovation, autonomous tech and robotics, digital assets and fintech, and genomics and biotech. These sectors are chosen for their potential to grow exponentially and reshape the market.

AGP’s chief executive and managing director, Martin Switzer, expressed excitement about the fund. “This is an exciting announcement, both for AGP and for wholesale investors looking to access some of the world’s most disruptive private companies,” he said. The fund aims to tap into the growing demand for early private access to these companies, providing investors with the opportunity to participate in their growth before they reach public listing stages.

Top Holdings and Holdings Details

The fund’s top holdings include OpenAI and Anthropic, with SpaceX being the largest holding at 13.87% of the portfolio. Other holdings include Stripe, Replit, and Kalshi. No specific valuations are provided for these holdings.

OpenAI, a leading AI research organization, is known for developing advanced models like DALL-E 2 and GPT-4. Anthropic, a spin-off from OpenAI, focuses on creating safe and beneficial AI systems. Stripe, a digital payments company, facilitates online transactions for businesses globally. Replit, a coding platform, enables users to build and share software projects online. Kalshi, the world’s largest prediction market, uses collective intelligence to forecast future events.

ARK has been building and refining its SpaceX investment thesis since the company’s early days. SpaceX, a spacecraft manufacturer and space transportation company, has transformed the space industry with its reusable rockets and Starlink internet constellation. Despite initial skepticism, ARK’s research reportedly supported SpaceX’s valuation at the time, considering the company’s potential in launch services, Starlink, and other ventures. The fund’s website states that SpaceX accounts for roughly 13.87% of the portfolio.

Growing Demand for Early Private Access

The ARK Venture Fund joins other strategies catering to Australian wholesale clients seeking early access to tech and AI companies. Pengana Capital’s AIX trust and its Private Equity Trust (PE1) are early examples, with PE1 seeing a valuation jump following SpaceX’s market debut.

Pengana’s AIX trust, launched in June 2022, invests in AI and data analytics companies, providing investors with exposure to the growing AI market. Similarly, Pengana’s PE1, launched in 2018, focuses on private equity investments, including early-stage tech and AI companies. The fund’s exposure to SpaceX has proven to be a significant driver of performance, demonstrating the potential of early private access investments.

Overseas, Goldman Sachs has reportedly built a private markets platform for wealthy clients and family offices focused on AI investments. This trend reflects the growing appetite for early access to high-growth tech and AI companies, as they often offer substantial upside potential before they reach public markets.

According to a report by Preqin, the global private equity market reached $8.2 trillion in assets under management in 2021, with a significant portion invested in tech and AI companies. This growing market presents opportunities for investors, such as those participating in the ARK Venture Fund, to gain exposure to the early stages of innovative, high-growth companies.
